MexiKosher
When two very different cultures come together, the results can be highly intriguing, but only if you’re like, super into yogurt. Fusing two of the other kind of culture’s food: MexiKosher. Just now open on Pico (duh), MexiKosher’s exactly what it sounds like: a fantastic pun, and also a traditional Mexican restaurant employing all-Kosher preparations overseen by a chef who’s done time at Maestro’s and Bastide, and is now feeding it to you in a small, casual room with one side constructed of (and apparently this is legal) stones from Jerusalem’s holy Western Wall, aka the row of Tercels blocking you from getting to Vermont. The basic menu’s got your burritos, tacos, nachos, etc., which you can load up with whatever protein you please, including carne asada, baja fish (cod), beef schnitzel, and birria: lamb and beef braised for 16hrs in mixed dried chilis, so be sure to wash your hands after eating lest you burn your Left Eye, then it burns down Andre Rison’s mansion. In addition, the chef’s got specials every day (homemade tamales, grilled sweetbreads) with an emphasis on prepping items that’d normally be non-Kosher by subbing in inventive ingredients, including a soy-based sour cream and duck-and-brisket “carnitas” confit’d in duck fat – hey, thanks Goldberg! In addition, they’ve got 15 salsa options including mango habanero, roasted tomato & garlic, and an insanely spicy one made with the rare ghost chili, because all cultures can agree that chilies named after sexy Patrick Swayze movies are awesome.

Mixie: Your new limited edition ride
Just launched outta Long Beach by an entrepreneurial dude who also sells solar-powered cell phone batteries (so yes, to answer your question, this dude is killing it), Mixie’s making exclusively small-batch, small-framed, fixed-gear-meets-BMX-style bikes, which’re very different than DMX-style bikes, as those are much Ruffer to Ride.
Bikes are limited to just 60 per design, come in a Benetton ad’s worth of colors (neon green/sky blue/the black-and-white “tuxedo”), and’re available in two styles (both of which’re lightweight enough to carry and small enough to fit in the trunk or backseat of a car): the classic, 10-speed-esque “Straight Edge”, and the more compact-looking “CrissCross”, which is always a good thing to have around when you miss the bus (and that is something you will neverevereverdoagain). The two-wheelers’re also enhanced w/ crazy-looking design details on the handlebars/seat/pedals, ranging from stickers made from customer-generated art, to ostrich skin, to faux crocodile, mostly so you can look at other people’s rides and say, “Sorry mate, that’s not a bike. This is a bike!”…and then cut up their leather jackets with a huge Bowie knife.
They’re also planning on potentially opening a custom shop in the future, and, ‘cause they’re awesome, they made a neon-green bike specifically for one Thrillist reader; be the 150th person to email below and it can be yours for free, so long as you’re willing to drive out to Long Beach, which is a lot more convenient if that’s where your dogs are at. Grrrrrr…
Another awesome find for you lovers of the brew here in Los Angeles… :) 8th Street Bottle Shop: Tap the Bottle. Twist the Cap. 8th St Bottle Shop’s exactly what it sounds like: an old-timey, apothecary-esque, bottles-only beer shop w/ 100+ selections carefully curated by the lauded brew-obsessed duo The Beer Chicks, uniquely located within the Golden Gopher, which has a to-go liquor license that dates back to 1903, but won’t date before that, as dudes who’re over 111 are mad creepy. Beers’re almost all small batch/rare, with unusual selections on the shelf now including the dirty-sounding, ultra-hoppy Mikkeller/Brewdog I Hardcore You; the malty-and-oaty Drake’s Brewing Expedition ale, and Telegraph Brewing Co’s Obscura Arborea, which is a sour brown ale done “Flanders-style” and if you don’t know what that is, you don’t know diddily…iddily, iddily. Once they’re running full tilt, they’re planning on having artisanal snacks, as well as occasional specialty keggers, a beer club membership that’ll give a heads up when they get ultra-rare bottles, and a night they call “meet the brewer”, so get psyched to meet Greg Vaughn!!! Or less spectacularly, BJ Surhoff. The whole thing starts going down tomorrow as part of the Downtown Craft Beer Crawl, which offers unlimited tastings of over 60 beers at 7 downtown bars, as well as pairings with food from some of the cities best trucks, most of which only feel like they’ve been around since 1903.

From a Swiss-born designer sick of “bad-clip-art” temp tats, Tatt’s a new e-shop of weirder ones worked up by her and 14 designer pals from the world over, from pipe-smoking rabbits, to old-school Apple mouse cursors intended for under your eye, though considering it’s a temporary tattoo, the only thing you’ve murdered is your street cred.
Objects: An aqua ‘80s-style digital watch (intended for your wrist) whose face reads “LATE”, a multicolored, instrument-paneled old-school robot, and a vintage desk microphone, whose designer recommends you “put multiples on your fingers for big announcements”, which math nerds refer to as E=MC-ing. Abstracts: From a wild mess of thin lines aptly titled “Scribble”, to a hollow circle with slits that’s meant to resemble a camera aperture (throw it on your nethers to be doubly exposed). More: Everything from a Pantone-style color square of your skin, to a nautically-anchored design for “MOTHER”, to knuckle jobs that’ll spell out phrases like “play hard”, and “burn slow”, though it might be more accurate to flip it around if you’ve really backed up that tramp-stamp.

Because being “extreme” and relaxation shouldn’t only coexist next to the words “nacho cheese”, Leisure Dive’s a new rage created by a handful of friends collectively “dedicated to chilling out poolside, with a beverage, and in mid-air…and the attitude that surrounds it”, accepting submissions from anyone who “by definition…likes to jump off things and just chill”.
