Occupy Wall Street…like me, you may be asking yourself what in the world is this all about? I’m not sure if I have any answers but I do find it all fascinating and taking up a lot of my random thinking. All at once I’m excited about the idea of young people peacefully protesting. It’s a sign that our democracy is working when people feel the right, the freedom, to protest without retaliation. But is there something more going on?
I’ve been reading a lot lately about what other people think about this. Vanity Fair has a great piece by Joseph E. Stiglitz called Of the 1%, By the 1%, For the 1%. Joseph writes that with so much of the nation’s wealth in the hands of the few, everyone ultimately loses and protests like this are inevitable. He claims that the unemployment rate of young people in America is at 20% and in some areas and some socio-demographic groups, it’s twice that.
