Bon Appetit just released their 50 best restaurants in the country.  They will narrow this down to a Top 10 on August 14th and then name the best one.  I’m sure all of that will be great but until then, all I really care about are these five restaurants here in LA.  You already know that Hinoki & the Bird is one of my faves.  But there is another on this list who JUST MIGHT cook for an upcoming Eat+Drink Supper Club event.  Keep an eye out!

This is a GREAT list of desserts in Los Angeles that are A-MA-ZING.  Go eat ALL OF THEM!!

Tasting Table’s Desserts of Summer

L.A. pastry chefs have upped their game, and it’s certainly paying off: We’ve highlighted six sweet endings that have swept us off our feet this summer.

Mint-Chip Ice Cream Pie: Roxana Jullapat peruses cookbooks your grandmother probably owned for classic dessert inspiration, and her interpretations at Cooks County never cease to amaze. Her swoon-inducing mint-chip ice cream pie ($10), served with cocoa-dusted pecans and a generous drizzle of chocolate syrup, will transport you back to childhood birthday parties.

Butterscotch Coconut Tart:  At Downtown’s smoking-hot Bestia, chef Ori Menashe’s fresh pasta gets the most attention, but it’s the ephemeral Italian desserts of his wife, pastry chef Genevieve Gergis, that send diners home with a grin. Try the flaky-crusted butterscotch-coconut tart ($9), served with a quenelle of cool coconut sorbet and slices of stone fruit.

Monkey Bread: While the gooey, caramel-laden cake known as monkey bread ($8) might evoke breakfast nostalgia for Southern transplants, it’s a new treat for Abbot Kinney. At Salt Air, pastry/sous chef Megan Haney serves the decadently soft, pull-apart sticky bun with pralines and rum-marinated raisins over a pool of crème anglaise.

Vietnamese Coffee Snow: Pastry chef Ramon Perez’s most refreshing Asian-inspired desserts at Hinoki & the Bird are his feather-light bowls of shaved ice. Our current favorite is the intensely aromatic Vietnamese coffee flavor ($9), tinged with the lightest hint of sugar and cream. Perez finishes the dessert with cubes of his own fermented coconut jelly—called nata de coco—made with dried, shaved coconut.

Blondie with Salted Caramel Ice Cream: The menu at Connie and Ted’s might seem casual, but with seafood guru Michael Cimarusti at the helm, the fried clams and lobster rolls that land on the plate are anything but. The same goes for pastry chef David Rodriguez’s desserts: You’ve had a blondie ($9) before, but not like this. We still dream of the fork-tender brownie crowned with a melting scoop of salted caramel ice cream.

Strawberry Macaron Sandwich: How do you make an ice cream sandwich ($9) even better? Upgrade with house-baked vanilla-bean macarons, like Spanish pastry chef Cesar Bermundez Cifuentes is doing at Sawtelle’s Flores. Like many of the dishes at the restaurant, the rich and creamy confection, filled with homemade strawberry ice cream, is best eaten with your hands.

I love this map and some of my recent faves are listed.  Salt Air (review coming soon), Bestia, Hinoki & the Bird, Riva Bella…….aaahhhhh.

Eater LA Heat Map

More often than not, tipsters, readers, friends and family of Eater have one question: Where should I eat right now? Restaurant obsessives want to know what’s new, what’s hot, which favorite chef just launched a sophomore effort. And while the Eater 38 is a crucial resource covering old standbys and neighborhood essentials across the city, it is not a chronicle of the ‘it’ places of the moment. Thus, we offer the Eater Heatmap, which will change continually to always highlight where the foodie crowds are flocking to at the moment.

Jonathan Gold’s 101 Best Restaurants (in Los Angeles)

The LA Times’ Jonathan Gold just came out with his best 101 restaurants today.  How many have you eaten at?  I’m going to print this list out and see how many I can go to in the next year.  You?  :)

Hinoki & The Bird

When the biggest issue you can write about a restaurant is that it’s difficult to find, you know this review is going to glow.  I’m sure by now you’ve heard of Hinoki & The Bird which opened in January.  David Myers imaginative food is amazing but you’ve come to expect that, right?  David’s long list of restaurants include Sona, Comme Ca in West Hollywood and Las Vegas, Pizzeria Ortica in Orange County, multiple Sola locations in Tokyo and now of course, the Silk Road-inspired Hinoki & The Bird in Century City.

I ventured in to Hinoki & The Bird last night with friends only after having to call the restaurant to truly figure out where it was.  That’s because it’s part of a new building in Century City on a road that didn’t exist when the GPS in your car was last programmed.

But that was the last of my challenges as I arrived early and seated me immediately.  Unheard of in LA, I know.  I ordered a drink, the Gordon’s Cup on my waiter’s recommendation and eased into some serious people watching.  And then I noticed it.  The kitchen.  The only kitchen I’ve ever seen with the best looking kitchen staff EVER.  Now, I’m not talking model thin, crazy high cheek bones good looking.  I’m talking about the kind of attractiveness that just makes you want to invite all those people to your house, visit and drink long into the night.  Well that’s my version of good looking at least.

Our waiter was sweet and kind and knowledgeable.  We went over half the menu before my friends arrived but that was all I needed to put us in his hands for the evening.  We started with the Raw Bar and devoured the Marinated Tuna and lemongrass salad along with the Scallops with grapefruit and lime leaf.  Next was the Crispy Marinated Chicken with lemon aoli, Chili Crab Toast with spicy cucumber and coriander and Salt & Pepper Marinated Fried Calamari with ajwain-tomato jam.

What I’m about to tell you is shocking, I know, but I ordered too much food.  So hold on to your hat.  After the Raw Bar and Fun Bites items, I moved to the bigger course with the BBQ Pork, Apple marinated Shortrib, the Lobster Roll, Coconut-curried Mussels, Hinoki scented Cod and the Caramel braised kurobuta Pork Belly.

Oh yeah and then we had dessert.  Yikes!

Nick, one of the managers, came over to see how we were doing and he couldn’t have been more delightful.  Even the restroom had a bit of whimsy and something unusual about it.  If you haven’t tried Hinoki & The Bird yet, you must.
