Watch Yelp’s CEO Defend Yelpers on Charlie Rose

Here’s a video of Yelp CEO Jeremy Stoppelman’s interview on Charlie Roselast week. Stoppelman and Rose discuss the origins of Yelp, the importance of adapting to mobile technology, and Stoppelman’s decision not to sell to Google. Stoppelman also defends the reliability of the reviews and reviewers on Yelp, gives his thoughts on whats wrong with Google and Groupon, and much more:

· On the acccuracy and fairness of Yelp reviews: “I find it accurate. If you go and you find a 4.5 star business in New York that has 70+ reviews, you’re pretty much guaranteed to have a good experience … Having quantity of reviews is part of it. Having quality of reviews is part of it, a rating attached to an in depth review. Knowing about the reviewer themselves, their identity is part of it.”

· On protecting against fake reviews: “We try to protect against all of the bad stuff with a review filter. What that’s doing is gathering all sorts of signals on how people are using and contributing on the site and deciding which are reviews are the ones consumers should probably rely on and which are the ones we’re not so sure about. And we set aside the ones we’re not so sure about. North of 20% of our content isn’t actually on the main business page, it’s in a separate section called ‘Filtered Reviews.’”

I’m seriously thinking of checking this place out this afternoon.  Anyone else want to come?  :)

South Hospitality: Abbot Kinney Pizza from a Mozza Vet

You’re in Venice. The LA one.

Thinking about Venice. The Italian one.

And how there’s a lot of pizza there, but none from a Mozza vet…

(And incidentally, the Florida Venice never crossed your mind.)

Meet South End, an intimate wine bar with pizza from the man who was recently running the kitchen at Pizzeria Mozza, now soft-open on Abbot Kinney.

The keyword above was “Mozza.” Which means next time you feel like getting close to someone who appreciates the significance of said keyword, you’ll squeeze into this dark little box of wood slats. It’s got a giant mural of some girl’s face, and that’s about it, decor-wise.

I SWEAR this phenomenon is also happening here in Los Angeles.  It’s driving me insane because I keep thinking I’m turning into an old curmudgeon (I’m not, I swear!).  I hope Eater LA does a similar test here in LA.  Here are my top picks for noise: Bestia and Salt Air.

Decibel Levels in New York’s Hottest Restaurants

Critics, bloggers, and Eater readers frequently complain about noise levels in New York restaurants these days. Adam Platt wrote about the “Great Noise Boom” last month, and before that Robert Sietsema offered his own take on the noise problem. With this issue in mind, Eater set out to collect hard data on some of the worst offenders. Here, now, are peak decibel levels recorded at 19 of the city’s hottest restaurants in order of loud to loudest:

The Eat+Drink Supper Club

A Curated Dining Experience with Chef Josef Morphis

Chef Josef Morphis is the Executive Sous Chef at Mastro’s and his menu is not for the faint of heart.  Josef’s career started at Le Bistro at the Sonoma Hotel and from there to John Ash and Co., The Culinary Institute of America, Travina and Napa Valley Grille with the last two years at Mastro’s Steakhouse in Beverly Hills. Josef grew up in Sonoma County and has always had a strong passion for great food. Living and working in the heart of the wine country really focused his expertise in “Wine Country Cuisine”. Josef feels there’s nothing better than creating a well-balanced meal using the finest local ingredients. His focus on balance is key to planning his menus.

Saturday, September 21st
7:00p Cocktails & 8:00p Dinner: $100

I’m realizing that 28 is just not the number of people you want at these events so I have 40 seats available for this September 21st dinner.  (Am I officially giving in to this group?)  $100 per person includes EVERYTHING (all beverages are complimentary), all you have to do is bring your hungry, thirsty self.  Like Eat+Drink MASTRO'S Supper Club - September 21st on Facebook

If you were at our house this past Saturday for the Eat+Drink FRENCH Supper Club event, you had the pleasure of tasting some of the best damn lamb on the planet (yes, it was cooked for over 9 hours).  If you weren’t there, you can watch Chef David Feau in action on September 24th on the newly launched Esquire Network (formerly known as G4). Previous promos gave you only the most fleeting glimpses of David but this one gives you what you want - DAVID!  Check it out!!!!!

Watch a Preview for Knife Fight, Premiering Sept. 24

The Esquire Network has announced that Top Chef winner Ilan Hall’s new show Knife Fight will premiere on September 24th. The show was originally set to air this past April, but NBC Universal decided to postpone the release of the Esquire Network — a rebranding of the G4 network — by a few months to create “more original programming.”

The concept of Knife Fight remains the same. The show puts two chefs in competition with each other at Hall’s LA restaurant The Gorbals in front of “a rowdy crowd, including friends, neighbors, and an eclectic group of celebrities, food professionals and die-hard foodies .” The first episode will pit British chef Brendan Collins (Waterloo & City, LA) against French chef David Feau (Le Ka, LA),

Here Are the Rules of Dating a Chef From Eat Drink Love

Last night Bravo premiered Eat Drink Love, a new reality series that tracks five ladies “connected to the restaurant and food industry in Los Angeles.” The cast: Eater’s very own Kat Odell (editor of Eater LA); Brenda Urban (of the PR firm Urban + Allen; Jessica Miller (Senior Director of Sales & Events at the LA restaurant group Cardiff Giant); Nina Clemente (“one of Los Angeles’ most sought after private chefs”); and Waylynn Lucas (the pastry chef behind fōnuts). Today, Glamour called it “one of the most exciting reality offerings in years.”  READ MORE

Bon Appetit just released their 50 best restaurants in the country.  They will narrow this down to a Top 10 on August 14th and then name the best one.  I’m sure all of that will be great but until then, all I really care about are these five restaurants here in LA.  You already know that Hinoki & the Bird is one of my faves.  But there is another on this list who JUST MIGHT cook for an upcoming Eat+Drink Supper Club event.  Keep an eye out!

Shell Game: Stack seafood, not bills, at EMC Raw Bar in Koreatown

As we’ve mentioned more than once in the past few months, there may be no better time than now to dive into fresh seafood in L.A.

The only downside? It usually results in a much lighter wallet.

Imagine our delight, then, when we discovered EMC Raw Bar & Seafood, an expansive wood-and-glass-lined restaurant located within Koreatown’s most opulent mall, City Center on 6th.

Daily from 5 to 7 p.m., a seasonal selection of $1 oysters is available, ranging from Chesapeake Bay Eastern bivalves to Kumamotos. Splashed with lime-jalapeño rice vinegar or truffled ponzu with fish roe, they’re a gloriously briny meditation on the purchasing power of a single Washington.  READ MORE

I can’t hide it - I love Superba.  I love Jason Neroni.  I love his pasta.  I even love Rose Ave.  Soon, there will be even more Superba to love!!!

Superba Food & Bread

After chatting with Paul Hibler and chef Jason Neroni earlier and learning more about their forthcoming Superba Food & Bread, Eater decided to hit up the restaurant’s proposed locale, a former auto body shop on Lincoln Boulevard in Venice. A very cool and creative site for a restaurant. Cal Asia has signed up to managing the building’s construction/renovation, and Design, Bitches, who colored Superba Snack Bar (and won an AIA award for their vision) is onboard here again for design. On their website they have a bunch of renderings which depict Superba Food & Bread as a promising social hub with an exposed ceiling and open layout. It looks like they’ll retain some of the auto shop’s original bones, while updating the space with an overall industrial vintage aesthetic. The goal is to open by the end of this year.  READ MORE
