OMG - coffee is going to kill me!!! :)

A new study offers further proof that coffee research is schizophrenic.

Your memory will get better. It will kill you. You won’t commit suicide. It will kill you. You might not get Alzheimer’s. It will kill you. You might not get a stroke. It will kill you.

Tracking scientific research on coffee consumption is to subject oneself to peaks and dips more dramatic than any caffeine rush and crash. Apparently, the medical profession can’t decide if coffee is going to save or ruin us all.

The latest research is decidedly in the later camp: Drinking more than four cups a day puts you at 56 percent greater risk of death “from all causes,” is how The Guardian sums up the new study published by the journal Mayo Clinic Proceedings.

So my friend Shelly Fairchild said she wanted to meet us for breakfast before we flew out of Nashville so she picked this uber-hip coffee spot for us to get together. They are pretty damn cool down there. But why does every hip, cool locale now have mason jars as glasses?

These days, the caffeine-scenti flock to an odd corner of Downtown’s Arts District, where the new Handsome Coffee Roasters sits across the street from an Italian fabric importer and around the corner from an indoor gun range.

But with your back to the plate-glass windows, you would think this was Abbot Kinney or Sunset Junction rather than a light industrial zone, what with the impeccable staff and clientele: This isn’t where you caffeinate while foggy-eyed and still in sweatpants.

Too bad, because the Fisticuffs Espresso that is the base of the roaster’s “espresso with milk” drinks–offered in 3, 5 or 10 ounces–delivers a fix with the tart, fruity-sweet kick of an expert light roast. And there are pastries from Proof Bakery to be had, including the Atwater fixture’s salt-scattered chocolate chip cookies ($4), which we believe are the true breakfast of champions.

If you tend to add sugar to your coffee, be sure to get a pastry, because Handsome does not offer sugar–or any kind of milk that doesn’t come from a cow.

Yes, they’re coffee Nazis here. But nice, Handsome ones.

(Yes, we’re man enough to admit we occasionally enjoy both of those channels for the culinary contributions to our nightly meals.) They’re everywhere. Combine that whole back-to-the-roots, small batch production mentality to coffee and you’ll end up at Rival Bros. Started in Philly by the famous chef Jonathan Adams and artisanal coffee expert Damien Pileggi, Rival Bros is everything Starbucks should have been from the beginning–small batches of coffee custom selected, combined and roasted with an almost obsessive attention to detail. If you live in Philly you can pick up it made fresh from their “food” truck. If you don’t, order it online and brew it yourself. The coffee is so good you won’t even want to put booze in it. **$12+**

Bodum is a name that even people who don’t drink coffee are familiar with. Their French press is the be all, end all when it comes to French presses. We love the one we have, but it’s also inconvenient on those days you’re running late or you need a few cups to get going. Bodum turned their eyes to drip coffee machines and the Bistro is what happened. The water tank is removable. The water itself gets heated and distributed by a spiral heating element (that brings it just shy of a boil) and a glass pipe to it’s final destination, a shower head that evenly distributes the water over the grounds. The freshly made coffee drips into a removable thermos that keeps the coffee warm. In other words, it’s a coffee machine that wasn’t just redesigned–it was re-engineered. **$250**

At this point in time, they should probably just give us stock options. When a company comes out with a product that supposedly fixes the only downside to coffee consumption (burning yourself) you can bet we’re interested. Enter Coffee Joulies.
