I’m sure every pizza joint on this list is amazing but I do think it’s a little lame that the only good pizza in LA is supposedly Mozza.  It’s good pizza but we all know the attitude isn’t worth going back after attempt 3 or 4.  I’ve even learned how to MAKE pizza there but don’t need to go back.  Although I will say that I was incredibly impressed with CHI SPACCA last week (review coming soon).  Stella Barra is amazing and so are a number of other joints around town!

The 38 Essential Pizzas Across the Country

The appeal of the pizza seems to know no bounds. While New York, Chicago, and San Francisco are all packing a number of absurdly great pizzerias, an excellent pie can be had just about anywhere in the country. And in just about any style: thin-crust, New York, deep dish, Detroit, bar, New Haven, Chicago, grilled, California, tomato pies, and Neapolitan among them. This last style seems to have taken particular root over the last decade with pizza-makers across the country importing ovens from Naples and churning out margherita pies topped with San Marzano tomatoes and mozzarella di bufala.

The question, of course, is which of these restaurants qualify as absolute must-stop pizzerias for the novice as well as the pizza snob. Earlier this year, Eater unveiled the Eater National Burger 38 in the grand tradition of the lists local sites have been putting out for years. And now, ladies and gentlemen, it is time to present the Eater National Pizza 38, the 38 essential pizzerias (and restaurant pizzas) across the country.

I’m seriously thinking of checking this place out this afternoon.  Anyone else want to come?  :)

South Hospitality: Abbot Kinney Pizza from a Mozza Vet

You’re in Venice. The LA one.

Thinking about Venice. The Italian one.

And how there’s a lot of pizza there, but none from a Mozza vet…

(And incidentally, the Florida Venice never crossed your mind.)

Meet South End, an intimate wine bar with pizza from the man who was recently running the kitchen at Pizzeria Mozza, now soft-open on Abbot Kinney.

The keyword above was “Mozza.” Which means next time you feel like getting close to someone who appreciates the significance of said keyword, you’ll squeeze into this dark little box of wood slats. It’s got a giant mural of some girl’s face, and that’s about it, decor-wise.

Stephen Colbert & the Domino’s Pizza Drone

Is there really a Domino’s Pizza Drone?  Unbelievable.

From Eater: “Last night on the Colbert Report, host Stephen Colbert explored Domino’s new robotic pizza delivery technology. According the news clip sampled, thesmall, unmanned, helicopter-like machine ”can deliver two large pizzas in ten minutes in a four mile radius.” Colbert praises Domino’s for “innovating new ways to make food get in my face.” He also praises the “pizza drone“ itself for being ”a great way to make our drone program more appealing to Americans. Because no one likes the idea of US citizens being targeted with Hellfire missiles, but who wouldn’t want want to be targeted with a Cali Bacon Chicken Ranch?” READ MORE

Stella Barra

I’ve been in love with Stella Rosa in Santa Monica for awhile now.  Amazing pizzas, great drinks, decent wines and probably the best burrata appetizer I’ve EVER HAD IN MY LIFE.  Yes, you heard me.  THE BEST.  I just want to take it and smear it all over me so I can love on it 24/7.  Oh wait, I digress.

Stella Rosa has a paternal twin in Hollywood.  Not an identical twin but they look an awful lot alike.  Stella Barra is Chef Jeff Mahin’s Hollywood version of Stella Rosa.  The pizzas are there but they’ve added a few more things in - like lunch and breakfast.  Sounds like a must-go to me!

Cheebo

We used to live right up the hill from Cheebo in Hollywood a number of years ago.  It was my absolute go-to for breakfast, lunch and dinner.  I love it so much that if I’m not cycling on a weekend morning, I will drive the kids all the way across town for their fried bread, cheeburrito, chopped salad and pizza.

The LA Times reviewed Cheebo back in 2003 and I decided I had to check it out. The pizza sold by the foot is the big draw and you should definitely have it but it’s everything else that makes Cheebo worth coming back over and over.

For breakfast, the kids (and I) love the Chee-Begniers N Honey - and yes, that’s how they spell it on their menu so don’t give me any grief over it.  For the rest of us, it’s otherwise known as fried bread and honey.  These little pillows of fried dough come out steaming hot and make every bad thing that happened to you melt away.  After you satiate your sweet tooth, move on to the Cheeborito.  I go for the Original but add in Avocado.  One Cheeborito is more than a normal person can handle without feeling like you’ll lose a full day to the “sleepies” after you’ve consumed this massive beast.  I also love the Huevos Rancheros, classic SoCal breakfast.

If you’re headed to Cheebo for lunch, order the pizza and a Cheebo Chop.  This is by far my favorite chop salad.  They have a vegetarian version but I don’t understand the point of that.  Get it with all the cheese and meat they will put in. It’s delish.

To make Cheebo even more interesting than the food is that once in awhile a relaxed, chilled out celebrity will be eating right next to you.  It’s Hollywood so everyone’s cool like that.
